FAQs

Your Questions Answered: Everything You Need to Know About Orthodontic Treatment
What is the difference between an orthodontist and a dentist?

Orthodontists are dental specialists who have undergone additional training to diagnose and treat dental and facial irregularities. While dentists handle general oral health, orthodontists focus on aligning teeth, correcting bites, and resolving issues like crowded or misaligned teeth.

How do I know if I need to see an orthodontist?

The Australian Society of Orthodontists recommends children see an orthodontist by the age of 7 to identify potential issues early. However, anyone experiencing misaligned teeth, bite problems, or wanting to improve their smile can benefit from a consultation at any age.

What happens at the first consultation?

During your first visit, our orthodontist will examine your teeth, gums, and bite. X-rays and photographs will be taken to assess your case thoroughly. We will then discuss potential treatment options, the estimated timeline, and costs.

Do I need a referral to see an orthodontist?

No, you do not need a referral to make an appointment with an orthodontist. Simply contact our clinic to schedule your consultation.

What are the next steps after the first consultation?

After evaluating your case, we will guide you through the recommended treatment options and answer any questions you may have. We will provide a detailed plan, including when treatment can start, how long it will take, and a breakdown of costs.

How long does orthodontic treatment take?

Treatment duration depends on the complexity of your case. On average, treatments like braces or clear aligners last between 12 to 24 months, but your orthodontist will give you a more accurate timeframe based on your specific needs.

Can adults get orthodontic treatment?

Yes! It’s never too late to achieve a healthy, aligned smile. We offer various orthodontic treatments for adults, including clear aligners and ceramic braces for more discreet options.

What can I eat with braces or aligners?

With braces, it’s best to avoid hard, sticky, or chewy foods that can damage the brackets and wires. Clear aligners are removable, so you can eat anything you like, as long as you remove the aligners before meals.

How much does orthodontic treatment cost?

The cost of orthodontic treatment varies depending on the type and complexity of the case. During your consultation, we will provide a detailed estimate of the fees and discuss payment options.

Will braces or aligners hurt?

Some discomfort is normal during the initial fitting or adjustments of braces or aligners as your teeth begin to shift. This typically subsides within a few days and can be managed with over-the-counter pain relief.
